Privacy Policy
Azadaar is an app for the Shia community: prayer times, the Qur'an, hadith, du'a, majlis and jashan listings, lectures, and questions to scholars. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what control you have. We do not sell your data, we do not show advertising, and we do not use analytics or tracking software of any kind.
Who we are
Azadaar is operated by the developer of the Azadaar app, contactable at shaghilkhalid8@gmail.com. We are the data controller for the information described below.
What we collect
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Name, email address, phone number, postal address | To create and identify your account, and to let other members recognise you on posts and events you publish. |
| Password | To sign you in. Stored only as a bcrypt hash — we never hold the password itself and cannot recover it. |
| Profile photo and biography (optional) | Shown on your profile if you choose to add them. |
| Device identifier (guest accounts only) | So a guest who continues without registering keeps the same account when they reopen the app. |
| Content you create: events, community posts, articles, lectures, books, questions to scholars, RSVPs, reactions, feedback | To provide the features you are using and show your contributions to other members. |
| Country | So event notifications can be limited to your region instead of being sent worldwide. |
| Push notification token | To deliver notifications about events, invitations and replies. |
| App version and platform (with feedback only) | Attached when you submit feedback, so a reported bug can be reproduced. |
Location
With your permission, the app uses your device's location to calculate the Qibla direction and accurate prayer times. Your coordinates stay on your device — they are saved in the app's local storage and are not transmitted to our servers. The only location information that reaches us is the name of your country, which is used to target regional event notifications. You can decline the permission and set your location manually instead; prayer times and Qibla still work.
Contacts
If you choose to invite people to a private event, the app asks permission to read your address book and sends the phone numbers to our server to check which of them belong to registered Azadaar users. The numbers are compared in memory and discarded immediately — we do not store your contacts, and we never contact anyone in your address book. This only happens when you open the invite screen and grant permission.
Files you upload
Images, audio and documents you attach to profiles, events, lectures, articles and books are stored on our file storage provider and served publicly to app users as part of the content you posted. Do not upload anything you are not willing to share with the community.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only with the services needed to run the app:
- Expo Push Notification Service and Firebase Cloud Messaging — to deliver push notifications to your device.
- Our hosting and database provider — to run the API and store your account and content.
- Our file storage provider — to store and serve uploaded images, audio and documents.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users.
What we do not do
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics, tracking or profiling software.
- No sale or sharing of personal data with data brokers.
- No use of your data to train machine learning models.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and content until you delete your account. Deletion is immediate; copies in encrypted backups are overwritten within 30 days. Where the law requires us to retain a record, we keep only the minimum necessary and do not use it to contact you.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction — view and edit your details in the app under Profile → Settings.
- Deletion — delete your account and data at any time. See how to delete your account.
- Permissions — location, contacts and notification permissions can be withdrawn at any time in your device settings.
- Complaints — depending on where you live, you may have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email shaghilkhalid8@gmail.com from the address registered to your account.
Security
Passwords are hashed with bcrypt and never stored in readable form. Your session token is held in your device's secure storage. Traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Children
Azadaar is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we will update this page and the "last updated" date above. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
